Was wanting to get (back, used to do it some many years ago) into whipping and lighting them on fire. Do you think it best to buy a non-fire whip to practice whip (if so, what style do you recommend? florida, bull, etc) or just get the fire whip to practice with. Thanks for any help!

Jeffz. I would suggest a good leather whip.. Bullwhip is my preference... 6-7 foot. The thing about using a fire whip to practice is it does not hold up well to abuse..

I just got my fire whip yesterday. I'm pretty gentle with it, but I don't want to screw it up learning the ropes. I'm practicing whilst perched on top of a metal plate on a construction site. Given my general gentle methodology would you still recommend the use of a bullwhip?

I Work with regular whips( 6' 8' 10' and 12')Snake and Swivel. Most western shops have whips or they can order it. Stick with 6ft to 8ft. Rember Safety, you only have two eyes. Please get some safety glases. I'm new to the Fire seen. I'm interested in fire whips. Any info. Wood be Great. Thanks. I do leather work. Was woundering, What if I braid Kevlar Tape around a round wick. Like in braiding Leather Whips. It's a thought. or should I just buy one + how much was yours, give or take a fue bucks. Thanks

I got my whip from Riz, (the cutest three footer you've ever seen.)
Ordered a second one not too long ago ( 3ft also) A three footer I believe ran me around $100. Now, I have looked at the bear site and I saw his whips which I think I remember priced around 60~100 depending on the type of material. I thought about experimenting with one of the bearclaw whips but I'd have to get one custom made to be shorter...and I'm not sure I'm comfortable with his design..but i haven't seen one in person yet so I might feel different about it once I see it.
I am very much a novice with a whip and I'm leary of trying to learn the cracks with my firewhip, as I have seen whip's fall break apart after being draged across the ground.. My guess is that sand will saw through kevlar as well as leather. Oh right, I'm left handed so I have to becareful which way I swing my whip, since I have unscrewed the nuts and bolts that help hold the thing togehter...righty tighty, lefty loosey :P Hope this helped?

The real difference between the Riz and Bearclaw whips is kinda where you're looking to go. Riz is crazy enough to do a full braid on his whips so they feel as close to leather whips as you can get: fast twitchy action, even flexibility, etc. The Beaclaw whips are for people not as serious about whipping but are looking to save cash. They're a little sluggish by comparison, and aren't as precise; you need to get REALLY good with them before you go lighting anyone's cigarette. But they're quite a bit cheaper and have comparable burn times.

          Ahh,

Thanks for the info! Although I'm not looking to light up any cigarettes any time soon :P Knowing me I'll more than likely get one of the bearclaw whips as well, just a three foot instead of the 6 footer.. and with comparable burn times then I'm guessing its a matter of preference and "feel". I'm gonna have to look into those. :)

I would suggest a nyoln whip you can get a very high quailty whip 6 ft for about $120.
there is a whipmaker here in fl 21st century whips google him he makes the best nylons I have ever used..expect to wait at least 6 weeks to get one of his whips though they are in very high demand .. I have used whips made from just about every well known whip maker
when I was doing non fire whip compitiions.. I can remember showing up in Dallas with two neon green customs made 6 ft 21st century nylon whips.. I mean these people were laughing at me me for pulling these whips out of my bag..Sadly by the end of the weekend
and 4 medals later most wanted to know where i got the whips so they could buy some.

I love nylon whips you can get them wet use them in the snow mud or whatever and other than discoloring them it doesnt hurt them I even used one in a swining pool once with a very speical girl but ill leave that story for the fetish tribe..Roo hide or leather whips take alot of care when using in a wet envorment

1st chocice 21st cenury whips in Fl tell him Riz sent you and he will charge you dble hahahaha..Tell him NOT to wax the whip he will try to talk you out of that but his whips are twice as fast non waxed

2nd choice Rhett kelly out of Ga

those are your 2 best nylon whip makers that do whips pretty much full time

If your looking to spent 300 to 500 bucks for kangroo hide whip Vitcor tella snakewhip.com
is the best in the states.. Mike murphy murphywhips.com or peter jack whips also are world class whips I have used them all..and have whips made by each of those whip makers hanging on my walls but for practice i prefere nylon. If im going to tear up a whip on practice id rather it be a 120 whip than a 500 dollar one. Stay away from those cheap leather $80 whips on ebay they are pure crap and will fall apart withing a month or so

Now to comment on teds post Yes I am wacked I fully braid my whips. the only difference between one of my whips and a leather or roo hide whip it i use fire proof matrails.
Our Fire whips are REAL whips 6 plait belly and a 8 plait overlay ( ted I braid it twice haha) that is why they handle like a real whip. because it is one.. I can pull off some of my harder 8 and 9 crack routines with one of my fire whips.. I can also take the rosebud off your smokey treat and then still cut it 4 or 5 more times before removing your lip..If your looking for the response and handling of a real whip in a fire whip Im the source.. If your looking for thepretty fire balls and flame effect and are not really worried about getting multi cracks and a real whip feel Ted is your source for that prop plus you will save about 100 bucks and you will prob get it about 5 weeks faster. As much as I hate saying anything good about ted ( just kidding) if your planing to really abuse your whip or use it on rough surfaces such as pavement or concrete his rope whip will prob hold up better than our braided whip. and it wont hurt your wallet as bad when the whip fails

One more thing about our whips they are rebuildable (Pi would know if he would ever send his back) as long as you dont damage the core or belly we can rebraid the outer layer for less than half the cost of a new whip.. I have been using the same 8 ft core for the last 5 years I redo my outer layer about once a year..

Wave if your just starting go with a longer whip 3 fters are fun but they move real fast too fast for most newbies I try to start newbies off with a 6 ft whip because of the extra length you can acctully see how the whip rolls out and that teachs you how to use it proper. once you understand how the whip works and mostly where it will end up AFTER you throw it..The shorter whips become real fun when i use my 3 ft roo hide whips my 2nd and 3rd cracks have already popped before I can even think about them. whip position is important if you plan on keeping your ears and eyes.learning that on a 3 fter will be a a very painful experince..

welcome to the world of whips check yahoo for a group call whip enthusiasts ( if you cant find it Pm me I will send you the link) that is an international whip group they hold whip gatherings all over the world Much like when we get toghter for fire jam ..You will find the people at these gatherings very nice and helpful most will not only let you borrow thier whip to try but show you the finer points of that style of whip.. I always suggest a newbie attend one of these whip enthusiasts gatherings before buying a whip the reason for that is you will find just about every kind of whip made and from all the best and not so best whip makers .Whip are a very personal thing and a "feel thing" try some different whips then pick what you thinks feels best in your hand and your wallet.

I agre on the nylon whips. other than the discoloretion, there low to no maintence. No oiling or condiction needed. & there lighter in wight. I would perfer them over Raa hides. But can't use them at Ren.Fairs or 15th--17th centuey Ren & Scottish re-inactment Fair's/Gemes & festable's. none period. All the fun stuff. Thanks 4 the info.

picky little bastards thoose 15th 17 th centry people are hahahahahaha to be honest I have seen brown nylons that unless you were les than 3 ft away you could never tell it was a nylon..but I understand that period stuff.. there is a cat in missouri drews whips he makes a nice whip real nice he is into all the re-inactment stuff he might even crack you a deal on a whip because of what your doing with it he only makes whip part time the set i ordered from him took almost 8 months to get but they cracked like nothing I have ever heard before super loud but they were on the heavy side which is why they cracked so damn loud..

I know it's an old as hell topic, but I got my first (nice) whip from karaka whips in New Zealand, a 9 foot bullwhip, and its held up AMAZINGLY to use, because 99% of the time I use it on grass. The best way to prolong the life of your whip is to stay on the lawn. Also, 6' is a great length for a beginner, the 9' I have is great, but it's SLOW (I find my biggest mistake is trying to go too fast through a transition) and is difficult to time.

while I don't (yet) own a fire whip, I would assume that the kevlar would last almost indefinitely on a low-wear surface (like grass) and would therefore be fine to learn on.
